After over a decade together in one form or another we felt it was high time Real Groove chased down synth-noise duo Golden Axe for an interview. Composed of Real Groove's own Chris Cudby and Daif King, the pair are featured in September’s Real Groove in support of their superb new album Fantasy Footwork. But the constraints of magazine pages being what they are we feel compelled to give you the full transcript of their conversation with Duncan Greive, a sprawling hour-long interview conducted amidst the pop-cultural rubble at Golden Axe’s New North Rd HQ. Duncan: When did you guys meet? Daif: We’re totally both from Beach Haven. How specific do you want to get? Duncan: Very specific. I want the day, I want first impressions. Chris: All I can remember is I was hanging around Daif at Birkenhead College quite a bit, and had a bit of a Lou Reed look going on – glasses, longish black hair, listening to, I don’t know, some dub homegrown music. I remember Daif and Daif’s... More >

Kids of 88 Sugarpills * Rattled by the sugar rush. This has to be a new low in New Zealand’s susceptibility to years-past-the-use-by-date bandwagon jumping and barrel-scraping from total chancers – as if we didn’t have access to the internet or television to tell what year it is. Pop-punk Parachute bros now in their 20s, dropping Es and feeling a bit naughty, have grave-robbed the most tired, played-out signifiers from electro-clash, electro-house and the hall-of-mirrors endless ’80s revival to bundle this bunch of Presets castoffs together as an album – good to know they’re able to fall back on both public funding and jingle-writing. So, bloghouse/indieclash/electro/heterotronica-by-numbers, compressed to muddiness, preset-happy and with moon/june/spoon lyrics; this is queasy listening – ‘Everybody Knows’ presents both sickly, trebly mewling and nasal Steriogram/Crazy Town-style faux-rapping (whhhhhhy?) with an S&M-lite vibe; edginess for people that found Placebo... And just like that, Katy Perry has her second consecutive number one single with Teenage Dream. It's perfect timing considering that her album of the same name came out on Monday and unless something else gets in the way (Disturbed, I'm looking at you), she should also have the number one album come this time next week. But this week is all about what's happening locally; a quarter of the tracks in the top 20 belong to local artists and The Naked and Famous have the highest debut on the chart with their latest one Punching In A Dream. It comes in at number 11, not quite as good as last time but beyond impressive when looking at how far this band has come recently. I'm assuming that it will become a top 10 staple in the next few weeks on the back of an excellent video (again directed by Special Problems, which you can watch below) and the general hoopla that surrounds the New Zealand Music Awards at this time of the year. Brooke Fraser's latest single Something In The Water... More >

In preparation for the release of their eighth studio album Ignite later this month, Shihad played shows through Australia and New Zealand tackling top-to-bottom two albums that loom large in their back catalogue, Killjoy and The General Electric. The day after they played Killjoy at Auckland’s Powerstation and on the eve of their run through of The General Electric, Shihad bassist Karl Kippenberger and front man Jon Toogood sat down for a cuss-heavy conversation revisiting their rock’n’roll past. One On One – Shihad's Karl Kippenberger vs Jon Toogood by realgroove ... More >

Kidz In Space’s Ashley Hughes talks about his favourite album, Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak. It’s damn near impossible to pick a favourite album, but I choose Kanye’s 2008 LP 808s & Heartbreak for its ballsy attitude and style. This is the album that told me that the so-called ‘rules’ in music don't really exist, and breaking moulds should be the aim for us all. Kanye is a genius lyricist and, within the simplicity of this album, he says so much. The opening song ‘Welcome To Heartbreak’ is a perfect example, and sets the tone for an album which brought a fresh new lane for the next generation of pop and hip hop. The melodic nature of the album makes it all that more appealing compared to more traditional hip hop, and the ’80s influence on production had me sold. I remember listening to this album after hearing a lot of people shoot it down (the auto-tune argument being the main issue they had) and thinking how awesome it was. This was reinforced following Kanye’s... More >

The big three (Dynamite, Love The Way You Lie, Teenage Dream) sit firmly at the top this week, readjusting slightly, but not allowing any space for Flo Rida and David Guetta to crawl ahead. Dynamite finds itself at number one for the second week in a row while Teenage Dream moves in for the kill as it inches up to number two. I'm fully convinced that the song will be number one by next week considering that the hype behind the album is in full effect (it drops on Monday) as well the fact that it's just a solid song. KP also has another song enter the top 40 this week - Circle The Drain, produced by Tricky Stewart is a punky little number considering what this guy is capable of giving us (see anything he's done with The-Dream; also, why didn't they ever call themselves The-Dream Team?). The song lands at number 36, which means that there are now three songs from Katy Perry in the chart. Taylor Swift makes the biggest fall this week, dropping 16-30. Her album isn't due out... More >

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: Live Nation Global Touring and Michael Coppel have today confirmed that JAY-Z will join U2 as the very special guest for dates in New Zealand and Australia. With hits such as 99 Problems, Empire State of Mind and Dirt Off Your Shoulder, and ten Grammy awards, JAY-Z is one of the most successful artists of all time. JAY-Z last played Australia in 2006 and he has never played in New Zealand. U2 and JAY-Z performed Sunday Bloody Sunday in front of Brandenburg Gate, Berlin in November 2009. For round three of our monthly(ish) club night at Khuja Lounge, 'Mean As', we have invited our good friend Buff1 from Ann Arbor, Michigan to come down and perform for the first time in Aotearoa (our first international guest). We being myself, David Dallas, Fire & Ice and our crew, Mean As Mob. Local hip hop fans will remember Buff1 from when he recently collaborated with David Dallas on 'Front To Back Remix', the b-side to Dave's hit single 'I Get The Feelin'. Buff and Dave later performed the remix together at the prestigious SXSW 2010 Music Festival in Austin, Texas. A blazing performance that was documented by influential hip hop blog and tastemaker The Smoking Section. For those of you who weren't fortunate to witness that performance in Texas (read: most of you!), this is your first and only opportunity to see 'Front To Back Remix' performed in full on New Zealand soil. Buff1 began his rap career in the Ann Arbor rap crew known as the Athletic Mic League (AML),... More >

If you’re reading this from your home in Ohakune, Great Barrier Island or maybe even Gore, and you were just thinking that you wanted a cult hip hop crew with their tongues firmly in their cheeks to tour in your town, then boy have we got news for you! Homebrew Crew, one of the country’s breakout acts of 2010, are taking a jaunt around the nation, making sure to stop over in some of the less frequented spots along the way. The group will visit all of the above below, as well as lots more through September, on what they’re calling The Good Country Tour. It’s your chance to see some guys who obviously love hip hop, putting their distinctively Kiwi mark on the genre. Homebrew grabbed headlines earlier in the year when they were refused NZ On Air funding for their single ‘Underneath the shade’. Deciding to “take the No. 8 bling wire approach and raise funds ourselves” according to an interview with 3 News, the band held a fundraiser at Auckland’s Plaything Gallery in Auckland,... More >
